Comprehensive Eye Care Services

Blog

Doctors of optometry provide comprehensive eye care services. The health of your eyes, corrective procedures, and preventive care strategies may be addressed during your first visit to an eye doctor.

Genetics And Age-Related Diseases

Genetics can be linked to the loss of vision. Albinism, for instance, results in the lack of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes. As a result, it is fairly common for someone with albinism to experience sight issues. Age-related diseases such as degenerative eye disorders can be inherited or caused by environmental factors. With this type of condition, sight loss occurs in the center of the field of vision.

Any concerns you have about a current or potential eye problem should be addressed during your initial appointment with an optometrist. The progression of some eye diseases can be slowed down and there are surgical procedures that can correct many persistent eye problems.

Corrective Lenses

An optometrist will check the health of your eyes and then will test your vision. If you have difficulty reading the letters that are on an eye chart, the optometrist may prescribe corrective lenses. If you have a slight vision loss, you may only need to wear lenses while driving, attending school, or performing focused activities at work.

If your vision is poor and being unable to see well is affecting the quality of your life, you may be prescribed to wear lenses throughout each day. Many optometrist offices feature a sales area that contains eyewear that you can purchase. If you choose contact lenses, they will need to be ordered in advance. Any glasses frames that you try on will give you an idea of how your own glasses will look. You will need to have prescription lenses added to the frames that you select.

Products That Protect

Ultraviolet rays can be harmful to the eyes. If you spend time outdoors on a daily basis and will be required to wear glasses, your optometrist may recommend that you purchase lenses that contain a UV-resistant coating. A dye is used to treat lenses.

Some products, including polycarbonate and high-index plastics, already contain a built-in protectant. These types of lenses will not require an additional coating. There are also lense materials that will protect against fog, scratches, and reflections. Inquire about the various lenses to determine which one you would like to have added to the pair of frames that you have picked out.

Vision and Learning

Vision problems can be sneaky. When my daughter started having trouble in school, nobody thought that the problem could be with her vision. She wasn't complaining about not being able to see ; she was acting out instead. Plus, she could read the eye chart. It took a lot of trial and error to realize that while she could see, her eyes weren't working together correctly. She needed vision therapy to get herself back on track. I started this blog to share information with other concerned parents about how vision affects learning. Don't let a vision problem sneak by you and impact your child's education.
